Why Florida can cover

The Gators have been stingy against the pass this season. Florida is giving up only 178 passing yards per game with opponents completing only 56% of passes against the Gators. Florida has allowed only two touchdown passes with four interceptions, and that resistance is key against the high-powered Tennessee offense. The Gators are also producing effectively on the ground on offense, averaging 212 rushing yards per game. Florida has a balanced rushing attack with four players generating at least 100 rushing yards in only three games, and the Gators are averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Florida also holds the edge in recent history against Tennessee.

The Gators have won 16 of the last 17 meetings against the Vols, including the last four meetings. In those last four games, Florida has scored at least 31 points each time, and Florida is outscoring Tennessee by more than 23 points per game while outgaining the Volunteers by more than 100 yards per contest. Finally, the Gators could benefit from the absence of star Tennessee receiver Cedric Tillman. He left last week’s game with a lower-body injury, and Tennessee hasn’t provided an official update on his status for Saturday.

Why Tennessee can cover

Though Florida has the recent success in the head-to-head series, Tennessee can benefit from the struggles of its opponent. The Gators have not won back-to-back games since the first two games of 2021, and Florida is on a four-game road losing streak. Florida is also just 2-8 against ranked opponents dating back to 2019, and the Gators are struggling through the air on offense. Florida has the fewest passing yards and the worst completion rate of any SEC team this season, and Anthony Richardson has multiple interceptions in back-to-back games.

Richardson is also one of only four players in FBS with no touchdown passes and at least four interceptions. In addition, Florida has only 10 plays of at least 20 yards this season, which ties for the fewest among SEC teams with South Carolina. Tennessee’s offense currently sits atop the SEC in total offense, scoring offense and yards per pass attempt, with top-two marks in passing offense and rushing touchdowns. The Vols also have the benefit of a raucous crowd at Neyland Stadium, and Tennessee is giving up only 14.3 points per game in 2022.
