Unbeaten Power Five teams collide this weekend as the No. 22 Penn State Nittany Lions visit the Auburn Tigers on Saturday. Penn State (2-0) edged Purdue 35-31 in its season opener before rolling past Ohio 46-10 last weekend. The Tigers (2-0) have begun 2022 in reverse fashion, cruising to a 42-16 victory over Mercer before holding off San Jose State 24-16 in their second contest. After splitting their first two meetings with Auburn in bowl games, the Nittany Lions posted a 28-20 home triumph in their initial regular-season matchup last year.
Kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The Nittany Lions are 2.5-point favorites in the latest Penn State vs. Auburn odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over/under for total points scored is 48. Why Penn State can cover
The Nittany Lions hope for a performance from Sean Clifford similar to the one he had against the Tigers in 2021. The senior quarterback was extremely accurate in the win, completing 28-of-32 pass attempts for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Clifford posted his 21st career 200-yard game last week versus Ohio, passing for 213 — and a TD — to pull even with Christian Hackenberg for second on the school’s all-time list.
Penn State’s ground attack also was strong against the Bobcats as the team rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Nicholas Singleton did the majority of the damage, gaining 179 yards on just 10 carries while scoring twice. The freshman set the record for most rushing yards by a player in his debut at Beaver Stadium and became the first Nittany Lion since Larry Johnson in 2002 to record multiple TD runs of more than 40 yards with 70- and 44-yarders.
Why Auburn can cover
The Tigers have lost only one of their last 47 home games against non-conference opponents and enter Saturday with a 17-game winning streak in such contests. Auburn outgained San Jose State 210-54 on the ground last week and rushed for all three of its touchdowns. Robby Ashford led the team with 61 yards on seven carries while fellow quarterback T.J. Finley ran for one of the TDs.
Junior Tank Bigsby and sophomore Jarquez Hunter scored as well, giving Auburn two of the six SEC players with at least three rushing touchdowns this season. Hunter leads the Tigers with four TDs on the ground after registering three as a freshman. Auburn has allowed fewer than 400 yards in five consecutive games dating back to 2021 after holding San Jose State to 326 last week.
